Cooling horses in summer, tips against heat stress & overheating

Everything you need to know about our cooling blanket

How to cool horses properly in summer

How You can avoid heat stress, what happens inside the body during overheating, and why our cooling blanket is often the gentler and more sustainable solution.

Quick explanation

Our cooling blanket works through evaporative cooling. To use it, it is activated with water, wrung out, and then placed on the horse. As the water evaporates, heat is drawn away from the body, allowing the horse to cool down evenly and in a controlled way.

Important

Not every horse shows signs of heat stress immediately. Older, sick, sensitive, and circulation-sensitive horses often need support earlier in summer, even if they still appear calm on the outside.

Remember

Gentle, lasting cooling is often more effective than a quick rinse, especially after training, transport, or on very hot days.

What happens in the body when a horse overheats?

High temperatures mean real hard work for horses. The body is constantly trying to release heat and keep its own temperature stable. If this no longer works sufficiently, the circulatory system, metabolism, and muscles come under increasing strain.

The consequences can include fatigue, loss of performance, severe exhaustion, muscle tension, or circulatory problems. In more serious cases, the risk of severe heat stress rises significantly. That is exactly why it is so important in summer to cool early and in a controlled way before the body reaches its limits.

Why is rinsing alone often not enough?

Many horses are rinsed off in summer to cool them down. That can feel refreshing in the short term, but it is not always the best solution. If water remains in the coat, it can heat up again in hot weather. The desired cooling effect often lasts only a short time.

Another factor is that not every horse finds rinsing pleasant. Some animals react nervously to water, hose noises, or hectic cooling methods. Sensitive, older, or horses with health issues in particular benefit from calmer, more even support.

Another important point is water consumption. Anyone who rinses several times on hot days quickly uses large amounts of water. Our thoughtfully designed cooling blanket is much more resource-efficient and already uses a comparatively small amount of water for a noticeable effect.

Did You know?

A cooling blanket can lower a horse’s body temperature by around 2 to 3 degrees Celsius within about 20 to 30 minutes through evaporative cooling. This can help stabilize heat stress more quickly and make recovery much more comfortable.

How does a cooling blanket affect the horse’s body?

Its effect is based on evaporative cooling. The cooling blanket is activated with water, absorbs the moisture in a targeted way, and releases it again in a controlled manner. As the water evaporates, heat is drawn away from the body. This exact process ensures gentle, even cooling.

The material is crucial here. A normally soaked blanket or fly sheet cannot create this effect in the same way. Only a special fabric with high breathability, good moisture distribution, and a targeted evaporation function enables natural regeneration without unpleasant heat and dampness building up.

Highly breathable materials help moisture, heat, and air escape continuously. Only then does the cooling effect remain stable and comfortable.

A good cooling blanket does not cool shockingly fast, but in a controlled way. That is exactly what makes it especially pleasant for many horses, particularly after exertion or on very hot summer days.

This not only regulates body temperature, but also relieves the circulatory system, supports recovery, and promotes overall well-being.

Which horses benefit especially in summer?

In principle, every horse may need support with cooling down on hot summer days. However, this kind of help is especially useful for older horses, sensitive horses, animals with existing health issues, and horses prone to heat stress or circulatory problems.

Controlled cooling is also often very valuable after training, after a competition, after transport, or after spending a longer time in the sun. Especially in moments when the body has already been working and also has to fight against heat, gentle recovery becomes crucial.

It is also practical when a cooling blanket can be used flexibly. A light, space-saving solution with a separate neck piece and an additional cloth makes it possible to cool larger body areas or individual zones. This is especially helpful in the stable, at competitions, in a stable tent, and while traveling.

Why this type of cooling is so practical in everyday life

A modern cooling blanket is easy to use. It is placed in water, soaked through, wrung out, and laid directly on the horse. Nothing more is needed. In everyday use, this is a major advantage because cooling can be prepared quickly and the horse is not unnecessarily stressed.

Thoughtful details such as a magnetic closure at the chest and neck, a separate neck piece, and an additional cloth for targeted cooling are especially helpful. This allows the application to be adjusted flexibly, for example for the neck, larger body areas, or sensitive zones. At the same time, everything remains light, handy, and easy to transport without taking up much space.

Sustainability also plays an important role. Anyone who achieves effective cooling with little water conserves resources and noticeably saves water in everyday life. Often, just one bucket is enough to soak several blankets. The remaining water can often even be reused in a meaningful way.

That is exactly why a cooling blanket is not simply practical for many horse owners in summer, but an intelligent support for healthy horses, greater vitality, and lasting well-being.
